Childcare and Family Life
Where I Stand
Childcare is an issue throughout this country, but it hits our families especially hard in Nevada. It can be great to have cities like Las Vegas that never sleep, but those schedules can put particular strain on our service workers in Nevada. According to the 2023 edition of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data Book, Nevada married couples making the median income spend 15% of their wages on child care, the HIGHEST child care cost burden of any state in that category. Single parents in the state spend about 38% of their wages on child care. With basic necessities already at an all-time high, it’s impossible for regular Nevada families to keep up with the costs of childcare. That’s why I’m for investing in and expanding childcare for Nevada families.
What I’ll Do
Not having adequate childcare puts our children at risk, their parents ability to make ends meet, and hurts our economy. That’s why I would invest in childcare by:
Expanding the child tax credit to give these families a bit extra leeway
Providing incentives and capital to invest in childcare providers to address shortages in childcare.
Guaranteeing Paid Parental Leave for All Parents
Expanding grants that will fund Nevada Childcare programs.
Childcare subsidies from the American Rescue plan have expired. We need to make these grants PERMANENT and EXPAND them
Why It Matters
Giving this much-needed relief to Nevada families will have positive effects on our children and our communities. It allows working families the peace of mind to know their children will be taken care and allows for them to get back to work sooner and provide for themselves and their families. It’s a no-brainer that would have a huge return to our community. It would improve our education system and our economy.
