Immigration

Where I Stand

Las Vegas is one of the most diverse cities in the country. Our service economy has greatly benefited from the contributions of immigrants who have made Las Vegas their home. That being said, we need to ensure our border is secure and our immigration process is fair to both immigrants and those currently living in Southern Nevada. We can do that fairly and humanely without demonizing a group of people who are just trying to create better lives for themselves and their families.

Currently, Donald Trump has encouraged some of the most racist tendencies in our nation, and some of our Nevada Democrats, including our local NV-01 representative, have voted for the Laken Riley Act. This act did nothing to secure our country or make it safer, but enabled Trump and Republicans to use immigrants as a racist dog-whistle. The Laken Riley Act has allowed for the deportation of non-violent, legal residents by fabricating claims against them. This action has led to gross violations of constitutional rights. If our current system allows for the deportation of legal residents, there is little stopping the deportation of citizens next.

What I’ll Do

In Congress, I will push for immigration reform that emphasizes humanity while ensuring safety and fairness. I will advocate for policies that protect the rights of immigrants and provide a clear and fair path to legal immigration.

  • Oppose laws like the Laken Riley Act

  • Make our border safe and secure by giving our border patrol agents the tools they need to do it.

  • Invest in technology and more border patrol agents to be able to meet the security needs that we have. Physical barriers in some spots may be helpful, but calls for a border wall won’t solve the problem.

  • Expand our legal immigration processes and hire more asylum court judges so we can efficiently vet and process more people so that we can incentivize people to do it the right way.

  • To discourage desperate attempts to get into our country, we can’t cut USAID programs that help stabilize the countries where these people are coming from.

Why It Matters

Immigration matters because it brings immense benefits to our country and our communities. Immigrants contribute to our economy, enrich our culture, and strengthen our society. By encouraging legal immigration and treating people humanely, we can create a more just and prosperous nation. We cannot allow fear and scapegoating to dictate our policies. By pushing for fair and humane immigration reform, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pursue a better life and contribute to the greatness of our country. Legal and illegal immigrants have a constitutional right to due process, and if those can be violated, then so can citizens, so we must ensure we all have the right’s to due process.
