Ethical Foreign Policy
Where I Stand
Our foreign policy has devolved into a shit show on a scale of massive proportions. Not only have we alienated our close allies, but we have enabled some of the worst dictators alive. We need to support our allies and not enable dictators like Putin.
We also cannot be complicit in conflicts in which MASSIVE human rights violations are taking place. What occurred on October 7th, 2023, was a horrific attack, and Israel, like any country, has a right to defend itself. Hamas is an evil terrorist organization that must be destroyed. However, the US CANNOT continue to supply Israel with arms if they are going to continue to recklessly kill aid workers and innocent Palestinians including children, and needlessly starve MILLIONS of people by restricting much needed aid. I DO NOT support Israel committing genocide.
What I’ll Do
As a member in congress, I would not vote to financially support governments that engage in clear human rights abuses and violations of another’s sovereignty just because there’s a clear economic benefit to doing. I would support a resolution immediately that includes freeing all hostages as well as a permanent ceasefire, and I would not support sending any arms to Israel if their government continues to kill and starve Palestinians or position themselves to take more land from Palestinians.
Why It Matters
What we stand for in the foreign policy arena affects us. It affects our economy. It affects our national security. It also tells us how we are going to treat our own citizens when push comes to shove. Who’s to say our government won’t do the same to us if they are willing to fund it somewhere else? Our foreign policy shows our values, what we are willing to stand up for, and the relationships we stand for. International order and cooperation is essential when it comes to huge global issues like the economy, climate change, and public health, like we just saw with the COVID-19 pandemic. We live in a global world, and we can’t ignore that. We also can’t afford to support and fund human rights disasters. We are better than that.
