Reform the Supreme Court

Where I Stand

Despite only winning the popular vote TWICE in 32 years, Republicans have defied voter will and stacked the Supreme Court with a 6 to 3 super majority providing a wrecking ball to Democratic policy. With Donald Trump becoming president again, it’s likely that we will see a 6 to 3 conservative majority for the next 20 years at least.

Democrats have done NOTHING while Republicans have gone scorched earth to make sure they gain every advantage they can. It’s allowed a conservative Supreme court to go rogue, already overturning long-standing precedents like Roe v. Wade they said they wouldn’t overturn. I am for much needed and long overdue Supreme Court reform that restores the credibility and balance of the court.

What I’ll Do

I would propose or consider the following legislation:

  • Introducing Staggered Term Limits (One 18-Year term) for Supreme Court Justices

    • This would allow for each presidential term to regularly appoint two justices instead of random chance

  • Establishing a clear, external code of conduct for Supreme Court Justices

    • Justices like Clarence Thomas have taken millions of dollars in gifts from wealthy men have jeopardized the impartiality of the courts. We must ensure these men and women adhere to a code of conduct that brings back credibility to our highest courts.

  • Every option should be on the table INCLUDING court packing, considering the levels at which Republicans have stacked the court and ignored voter will.

Why It Matters

The Supreme Court makes important rulings that can have transformative effects on policies that impact us.  In the last 15 years, we’ve seen the conservative majority rule in lockstep with conservative interests.

  • Has allowed corporations and billionaires to donate unlimited money to political campaigns (Citizens United v. FEC, 2010)

  • The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose (Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, 2022)

  • They gave Trump ABSOLUTE immunity (Trump v. United States, 2024)

  • Overturned long-standing precedence that allowed experts at regulatory agencies to protect against corporate overreach when delegated by Congress (Loper Bright Enterprises, Inc. v. Raimondo, 2024).

The stolen, conservative Supreme Court continues to make decisions that have huge implications for struggling Americans, and we cannot wait 20-30 years for the courts to be rebalanced, Democrats have to be BOLD and DECISIVE in this age of politics and reforming the supreme court has to be a big priority. We can’t accept a Democratic party that cares more about norms than delivering results to us because Republicans clearly don’t give a shit. Reform the Supreme Court NOW.
